Monday, October 3rd - Day 106 Update
Hello,
Tori had some difficulties with her GJ-Tube once again late Sunday night and early Monday morning... This time the J portion of the tube became plugged and we couldn't unplug it... Some of Tori's 10:00pm medications were not dissolved quite enough and a plug developed after given them. Tori was very agitated as she usually is when her GJ-Tube goes bad. We tried loretab and valium to calm her but eventually had to give her dilaudid at 1:30am. That dose put her to sleep for the remainder of the night and into the morning. I spent my first night at the UVRMC and found a nice, dark room with a couch very close to Tori's room. It worked pretty well and I woke up every hour or so to check on her throughout the night.
We were scheduled to get a new GJ-Tube placed first thing in the morning but we ended up getting to radiology around 11:00am... By that time, Tori hadn't received any of her medications or feed for over 12 hours. Thankfully, the GJ-Tube placement actually went quite smoothly this time and they also used a larger type of tube which 'should' help to prevent plugging moving forward. The one drawback of the new GJ-Tube is that it protrudes straight out of Tori's stomach and there basically is NO tube slack to work with. I am anticipating that this will present problems when we begin Tori's full therapies once again.
Tori was weighed today and the results indicate she is now 100.4lbs!! So she is moving in the right direction. Since every scale around here seems to be different I am anxiously awaiting the next weigh in. Hopefully it will show the same result or better. Ten more pounds would be great!! :-).
Tori went all day without the ventilator and vital statistics did well once again. I believe the antibiotics are almost complete by now and there should be only 1 or 2 days left. They did take additional blood and phlegm samples today and we will watch for any new growth on those. None of the previously taken samples have grown out. She was NOT moved from the ICU today.
Tori's PT therapists came by again today and did their normal routine. Tori's muscle tone and spasticity continues to improve mostly because the valproic acid levels are coming back up to the proper levels. Tori still is very startled and reactive to touch though. We are hoping this behavior leaves her as we begin to take her therapies back to full force.
Thanks again and goodnight,
-Tim
Im so happy!!
I'm so happy Tori has reached 100 lbs!! I'm still amazed at all the love and support she has! She is loved everywhere!! I told my family in Chile about her and she's in their prayers also!

Alright TORI!!!
Congratulations Tori on reaching 100#'s!! Good deal. Hopefully we can get to the next level-----110!! I am glad to hear Guy & Sophie are back. I know they provide great support to the Schmanski family. My sisters and I can hardly wait to meet this wonderful support system our Utah family has found. Keep up the good work Tori!! Re: Monday, October 3rd
Left work a little early today to sneak into Tori's room by 5pm.
She was doing fine when I walked into her room. Her bedroom door was opened and she was looking at the activity around the nurse desk and hallway. At first, she started crying when I walked in and I am not sure why. My hair wasn't done, that might be why.
She quickly settled down and seemed 'happy' to see someone. I tried talking to her for a while and she appeared to be paying attention. I wanted to make sure she didn't get over stimulated so we took our time and it was great to spend some time together with her.
At 6:30pm during the shift change, Tori's new nurse observed Tori and thought she was agitated. She wanted to make her comfortable and gave her some pain medication from her chart. She mentioned it to me. I didn't say that she didn't seem to need it according to our understanding of agitation for Tori.
By 7pm, Tori was sound asleep and I knew that the medication was the only cause of it. After Maria came in, I told her about the medication and she wasn't too happy about it. That's when I remember that we should always speak up when we have a concern. Sometimes just talking it through may help a lot.
Upon Tim's arrival, I decided to step out and ask the nurse which pain medication was used: Hydromorphone (Dilaudid). It is a pretty heavy drug and usually one Tim and Maria stay away from if at all possible.
Marilyn and McKenzie came to visit Tori tonight and it was a pleasure to see them. They looked great in their assorted Pray4Tori outfits.
Good night,
-Guy
Guy's return!
I was so surprised when I saw Guy at the hospital... What a great present for all of us! I just don't think him and Sophie have any idea how much they were missed! I hope that Sophie gets home safe and sound very soon. I took my oldest son and his girlfriend down to to see Tori. Matt hadn't seen her yet and it was good for him to have that opportunity. He wears his Pray 4 Tori shirt to UVSC! Yeah! Just so everyone knows ... I will have some new Daebora Bags ready to sell at the Dance Club and at the ward dinner on Tues. night.
Everyone keep on praying for our sweet Tori...
Mare
Guy - Good to have you back!
Guy, Thank you for your added comments. I am sure the whole Schmanski clan is grateful you had a safe trip and are now home. Tim and Maria are blessed to have such great friends!
