Happy 18th Birthday Tori!!! Thursday July 31st through Sunday August 10th

Happy 18th Birthday Tori!!!

Tori had her 18th birthday on Saturday and she had many visitors to the house over the weekend in addition to well wishing phone calls, cards and emails. Thank you all so much for remembering and caring!!

Tori received some nice gifts but more important was the well deserved and wonderful attention from her friends and family. Tori is certainly aware of everyone around her and when her friends are present she always tries to vocalize much more than normal. The highlight of the weekend was seeing Tori smile once more as she had her great friends McKenzie and Angel conversing with her. It has been a while since we have seen one and we can still count all of them we have witnessed on one hand... That is why her smiles mean so much to us and the only time Tori delivers a smile is when her friends are surrounding her. There is ZERO doubt in our minds that she is fully cognizant of those around her and her behaviors and actions in certain situations clearly demonstrate this.

Tori is now in dire need of her botox and phenol injections and thankfully she will be getting them this Thursday. Her upper extremities are very, very tight and uncontrollable at this point and Tori is definitely in more pain because of it all... We have to schedule Tori for anesthesia for the procedure which is what caused the delay since it was the first available opening they had at PCMC. She will end up being around 3 weeks over the 3 month milestone where she can get more injections. As stated before, it is crucial to wait at least 3 months between injections otherwise Tori's body will adapt to the botox and it will no longer be effective. We certainly don't want that so we will deal with a few extra weeks overdue.

We can't believe the summer is almost over already as Brendan and Whitney are preparing for school once again. With Grandpa and Grandma Schmanski gone until early fall we will need to get into the routine again with work schedules, shuttling Whitney and Brendan around to school, dance and karate and then we have all of Tori's therapy schedules as well. It is going to get busy around here once again and we will manage it all day by day.

Thank you as always for your continued love, prayers and support for Tori and our family.

Happy B-Day & great smile photo!

First and foremost, I wanted to wish Tori a very happy, healthy and belated birthday. The big 18, eh? Hopefully reaching this milestone age will be a propitious start to achieving other milestones -- in her recovery! Yes, as usual, I probably sound like an idealistic fool, but I'd always rather see a glass as half-full than half-empty. :D

I also wanted to say how happy I was to finally see that photo of Tori smiling, from back in the spring of this year. That's definitely a facial expression I haven't seen in her other pix, so I agree it is definitely a smile! Beautiful. :) I'm sure there are more where that came from! And now I'll stop rambling and attempt to post a frilly little B-Day gifts graphic that I thought Tori would get a kick out of. (I love cute, frilly graphics like this)

Happy Birthday Tori!

Happy Birthday Tori!

I am glad she had such wonderful birthday. I am also glad that Tori continues to do well. You are caring so well for her and need to recieve great honor in doing that. God has given Tori a special purpose in life and it is showing. Although God is allower of disability in one's life, God also gives in other ways. Don't even give up on Tori. She means too much to you. What can't be solved today, may solved in time.

You may also want to consider contacting the Terri Schiavo Foundation and see if they would be interested in interviewing you on their new Internet radio broadcast show called America's Lifeline. wwww.terrisfight.org. That is if you don't mind attracting attention to Tori. But, she needs all the attention and support she can get. On America's Lifeline, the Schindlers have interviewed families of brain injured loved ones:

Title April 26, 2008, 2nd segment
Illa Nofgizer
The Love of a Mother
Illa's daughter, Debbie suffered a profound brain injury when she was just 40 years old. After doctors believed that Debbie would not make any meaningful recovery, Illa fought for ten years to prove the doctors were wrong.

May 10, 2008, 2nd segment
Brenden Flynn, and his Mother Mary Jo Flynn
Proving the Doctors Wrong
Brenden Flynn is a 25 year-old and Traumatic Brain Injury survivor. His mother, Mary Jo Flynn, has been an RN for 22 years. Brenden and his mother will talk about how doctors said that he had no chance of having any meaningful recover after a horrible car accident. Brendan, himself, will tell us all just how wrong the doctors were and how, if not for the love of his mother, he would not be here today.

God Bless Tori!
