Monday and Tuesday, January 22nd and 23rd - Day 10 and 11 in Hangzhou, China

Hello all,

Tori was 'wound up' and agitated quite a bit Monday morning and we had to give her a xanax and zanaflex dose to calm her during the PT session with James. Since she had her second stem cell treatment scheduled for later in the afternoon we opted not to perform any strenuous PT on her during the morning session. It basically turned into an hour and a half 'massage fest' for Tori and she really enjoyed it of course. We don't want her to think she can get away with that everyday though ;-)

Tori was late getting into her stem cell treatment as they had issues with other patients throughout the day. She ended up entering the sterile surgical room at 5:00pm and returned to our room at about 6:15pm. The procedure went well according to Dr. Shi and Tori slept for 3 hours afterward while the IV based NFG and stem cells were administered. Then we created her 'vertical movie environment' and she watched two movies with headphones on while lying flat on her back. The second one was the 'Ice Princess' which is one of Tori's favorites. After we started it, Tori softly then loudly began moaning and 'aaahhh'ing for our attention while looking at us as well. It turns out the volume to her headphones was accidentally turned off and she was just letting us know. Once it was turned on she was calmly watching once more. It's small signs like that which constantly remind us that she is indeed 'in there'. We didn't elevate her again until about 2:00am and she slept very soundly the entire night.

Tori's temperature on Tuesday was a little high once more at 37.4 degrees Celsius but by the end of the day it was back down to normal or 36.8 degrees Celsius. That trend will probably continue after each stem cell treatment. James really worked Tori hard during Tuesday's PT session because Tori had about three days off. Tori was screaming quite loudly as James worked on her knees again... James decided to do a range measurement on her right knee and it came in at just over 40 degrees so I was very close in my 45 degree estimate from the last update. Her first measurement on the second day we were here was 7 degrees so that is quite an improvement!! James didn't want to measure her left knee as he wants more time on it. Tori then went in the stander again for two 5-10 minute raises of 52 degrees.

Tori didn't have acupuncture or EMT on Monday because of the stem cell treatment but she had both on Tuesday. James continues to raise the needle count and I posted a new image showing this in the gallery. Xanax is still required 30 minutes prior otherwise Tori is not too cooperative... James used two EMT systems on Tori's arms and legs as well. Tori 'seems' to have less muscle tone and tightness when she is in a relaxed state and better arm and hand control as well. But if she is agitated or has any anxiety at all, the muscle tone is certainly back. Tori was very calm tonight so after placing some small pieces of a Chinese rice cookie in her mouth I decided to place the cookie in her right hand under her thumb. Then I said "Eat it" and watched as she raised the cookie, opened her mouth and actually got it in!! Thankfully she nipped only a small corner off the cookie but WOW!! That was certainly something new!! :-) Again, another very clear sign of her awareness and cognitive ability. I even captured a picture and placed it in the Image Gallery. After some more cookie pieces Tori ate an entire yogurt and some fudge. She managed to get her lips around the straw into the yogurt but couldn't quite get that 'suck motion' needed to eat it so I feed her with a spoon instead. We're still working hard on Tori's sounds, mouth control and eventual smiles but there is nothing ground breaking on that front to report as of yet.

The weather here continues to be cold, foggy and rainy and we haven't seen the sun since we have been here... We are hoping that will change before we leave but aren't holding too much hope at this time. The entire staff remains very helpful and I'm trying to provide the nurses with a daily english lesson at this point. I'm also the resident translator of english at this time. They are so eager to learn and are progressing nicely especially since we try and make them speak english as much as possible :-) English phrases are very popular with them as well and here is my current favorite: "If you believe it, you can achieve it". I would say that is a good one to live by as well :-)

Grace, who does marketing for the Beike Group, arrived today and after speaking with her I now have a better understanding of the organization and how everything works at all of the hospitals. She also told me they are hoping to have the Costa Rica hospital up and going by the end of this year. That would enable many, many more Americans to have the opportunity for stem cell treatments and it would provide us a much closer location for our predicted next trip as well.

Thanks again everyone and until next time!!

There is a difference

Hi Tim, Maria and Tori:

I just want to say that I in looking at the pics of Tori lately, I see a difference. Her face looks more at peace, softer...maybe not the right words I'm using...but I definitley see a difference.

I noted a difference in Michael too...

I believe it's working... Praise God!! Glory to You and we give You all the praise.

Soon will come the day, when Tori smiles and can tell us...everything her eyes are saying...!!!

Happy for Tori

I'm so happy to hear that Tori is getting stronger every day and that the therapy is working for her. Tim and Maria, I saw another person on this site who was requesting information about going to China for stem cell treatment, and I replied saying that there is an alternative to going there. I just wish I would have seen Tori's website before you went with her, so I could have let you know this ahead of time. I don't know if you'd be interested in this or not, but I need to let you know that there is a company in the United States that makes products, that when taken, actually allow your own body to create its own stem cells. I don't know if you have heard of glyconutritionals, but it's a completely different technology, that when taken, allows your cells to create the correct structures on the outside of them to communicate correctly with each other again. The reason disease or lack of repair happens is because the structures on the outside of the cells are not complete, and therefore can't communicate with each other to know whether they are suppose to kill bad cells or defend good ones. This is why autoimmune diseases occur. These glyconutritionals also allow your body to create stem cells, which then go to migrate to any area needing repair, including neurons. The cost, while not inexpensive, is far less expensive than $20,000 for China's treatment, not to mention the cost of traveling there. There has been great success with this, and if you have any interest in this, I would be happy to tell you more about it. My prayers are with you all, and I wish Tori and your family the very best.

Re: Happy for Tori

Hi Diana,

Thanks again for your input and support and I replied to your original post and privately as well because I felt obligated to all of the people who are watching Tori's site and contemplating Stem Cell Treatment for themselves or their loved ones. This site provides invaluable information to them all and there are more than anyone can imagine. Some of them have even inquired about Diana's post. So my findings on it are below and can be used as needed or not:

Diana,

Thanks for your input Diana and I have spent a few hours extensively researching both positive and negative aspects on Glyconutrients, Ambrotose and Mannatech itself. In being open, honest, and frank as I always am, there are plenty of negative views particularly on Mannatech primarily because it is MLM (Multi Level Marketing) based and yes, you can also extensively research in a few hours with Google :-) I also live in Utah which is the MLM capital of the world so I understand them quite well. First off, it is highly misleading and an absolutely HUGE stretch to try and compare ANY nutritional product that MAY have the potential for 'helping your cells communicate' and for being 'likely responsible for causing the body to manufacture its own stem cells' to actually receiving 50 million adult stem cells and nerve growth factor. It should certainly NOT be considered as an alternative solution to Stem Cell Treatment and realistically cannot even be compared to it but it MAY be a complimentary solution. I state MAY primarily because there is NO clinical and peer reviewed data available on Glyconutrient benefits to human beings to back up the marketing claims made in your post. The product disclaimer indicated on almost every website I searched also validates this fact.

Even given all of that, I would still agree that some of the scientific analysis on Glyconutrients and the proposed benefits associated to humans seems plausible. Whether it warrants some of the product prices I reviewed I'm not nearly as sure. That fact combined with Tori's extremely sensitive digestive system makes me hesitant to try but if you are willing to donate a few months of the Glyconutritional supplements on trial basis I would probably consider it further and I am being very sincere on this request.

Please let me know through private email and thanks again for your input and support for Tori. As I have always indicated, I will at the very least research and consider any treatment that may possibly help Tori in her recovery and I stand behind that. I might not implement them all but I will be opened minded my research.

Wanting the best for your family

While it was my sincere intention to offer information to you that might help your daughter, you have reduced that intention, and I'm not sure why. I do not downplay China’s outstanding work, nor the validity or need for that work. What I have said is that there may be an alternative – a non-invasive and less expensive alternative – whereby glyconutrients help support the proliferation of one’s own stem cells (without any procedures being done), and then migrate and repair the body – all done with one’s own stem cells instead of someone else’s. To say that there is no evidence to that effect is wrong. And it worries me to think that people who desperately need stem cell treatment think they have to wait until they can acquire a large sum of money to get that treatment, and hold off getting that treatment while suffering in the meantime – especially when they simply don't know that there’s an alternative.

It is not my intention to have a debate, but to merely show that there is a wealth of information regarding this new technology that has changed so many lives already. If you have not already done so, please, more than anything that you research, go to www.mannahealthintl.com to view the 15+ educational videos and hear the testimonial audios of doctors who endorse and use glyconutrients themselves and have given them to their patients. See and hear the evidence for yourself. There is another website you can go to, www.vitalcarbs4life.com, where you not only can hear audio testimonials, but you can see how much scientific validation there is; and then of course, www.glycoscience.org for the scientific studies and clinical trials that have been done. Doctors use this site themselves, not to mention the Physician's Desk Reference.

Please also research MannaRelief, an organization that donates glyconutrients to orphanages worldwide for children that have life-threatening illnesses. MannaRelief also offers product in the U.S. to children up to age 18 on a less expensive basis if someone can sponsor that child at $125 a month. There is no compensation for any associate through this organization.

In Fisher Institute for Medical Research’s site, www.fisherinstitute.org, you can see the case studies that have been done, if you go to “Order” and then click on the “Proceedings” volumes. Fisher has a program where the people involved in their case studies can get the product for less. Here again, associates do not get compensated. These organizations might be able to help you continue your daughter’s improvement when she returns.

Tim, please look into this further. I would hate to think that a door would be closed on something that could be of so much benefit.

Re: Wanting the best for your family

Diana,

I do not doubt that your intentions are sincere, my intent was to to clarify the clearly distinguishable differences between the stem cell treatments Tori is receiving and additional nutrition from glyconutrients as Koo Choo validates in her post on Glyconutrients as well. Your original post stated "that there IS an alternative" to stem cell treatments which simply isn't true and that is what I am trying to dispel. It truly is an apples to oranges comparison. Again, glyconutrients may or may not be a complimentary solution to neurogenesis and I can find just as much research that indicates improvements are NOT guaranteed for everyone who takes them. Everyone's body naturally creates stem cells through bone marrow regardless of glyconutrients. The premise behind glyconutrients, which is basically just 8 types of sugar, is that they can enable this process even more. It concerns me when you explain in absolute and imho 'sales person' like terms such as "Stopping glyconutrients stops the ability of your cells to communicate correctly with each other – that stops their ability to recognize disease – which then allows disease to set in" which again is simply untrue because your body naturally does all of this anyway. Believe me, I have reviewed all of the sites you mention and many more without the Mannatech connections identified by this very informative and unbiased glyconutrient site. I would encourage you and anyone else out there researching glyconutrients to read it in it's entirety. Educating oneself and exploring ALL research data and opinions, both positive and negative, is the key to making informed decisions. Unfortunately, there those who won't complete due diligence before making those decisions... I'm certainly NOT one of them.

Again, with all of that stated, I haven't totally ruled out adding glyconutrient type solutions to Tori's care plan whether it is through diet control, Mannatech's products, other products or even home grown solutions which are available on the internet as well. I'll probably speak in depth with Koo Choo about her findings and try to locate others in Tori's condition who have tried them as well before making a final decision. Of course all of this will wait until we return home.

Thanks again Diana and Koo Choo for your valuable input and I'm sure others exploring stem cell treatments and glyconutrients will have plenty of data to make their own informed decisions.

Glyconutrients

Diana,

I do not think Tim intended to diminish your good intentions; he was just clarifying the facts. I have to agree with him that the glyconutrients you mention and the stem cell treatment that Tori is undergoing are miles apart. I also want to emphasize that the glyconutrients are NOT an alternative to the stem cell treatment Tori is receiving in China right now.

My husband Chris Barnes has sustained a similar injury to Tori. Chris has been having glyconutrients from Manatech for several months. I have sat in their seminars, seen the videos, and spoken to people who had good results with glyconutrients. I also researched other nutritional and alternative routes to help Chris neurogenesis process by providing him different supplements (Ambrotose being one of them). We all want to try everything possible for our loved ones.

Chris is going to China in April this year. The treatment he will receive there is absolutely not comparable with what the glyconutrients can potentially do. The stem cell treatment in China encompasses stem cell injections, coupled with daily rehabilitation and many other things. The loss of neurons Chris and Tori underwent would require more powerful stimulation that glyconutrients could EVER trigger. They are two distinct options.

Re: Glyconutrients

Dear Koo Cho,

Thank you for contacting me. There are a couple of things, however, that I would ask you to consider. Did your husband have any other health issues prior to his injury? How much of the glyconutrients did your husband take on a daily basis, and for exactly how many months? When you said “several,” that did not seem like a long enough time period. Some people take longer than others to get results, because people’s bodies are different and their cells recreate at different rates and points in time.

I would also ask if your husband is still taking glyconutrients? I ask this because, when your husband gets the stem cell therapy in China, those cells, plus the ones he already has, still need to be correctly structured in order to continue helping him. This, as you know, is what glyconutrients do, besides proliferating more stem cells in the body.

Cells are constantly dying and the new ones that your body acquires on a daily basis need to be correctly structured for the life of those cells in order to be able to fight disease. Each part of the body has a different cell life - some cells can last for years before dying off. This is why glyconutrients are important to continue taking, because you never know when a cell will die and another one be created.

Stopping glyconutrients stops the ability of your cells to communicate correctly with each other – that stops their ability to recognize disease – which then allows disease to set in. The cells would no longer be protected.

Since this will be my last post, I want thank you for responding. I wish your husband much success with his treatments, and that both your lives be blessed with good health.

Replay about reporter's e-mail......

Hi Tim, Here is the reporter's e-mail address: fclee@st.cloud.gannett.com I last talked to him on Fri (19th) and he had to talk to his editor and get back to me. What a coincidence that a MN family is there too! St.Paul-my birthplace and childhood home. Much success to you and them. Love, Shirley

Minnesota

Shirley,

Just wanted to chime in that I am from Minnesota as well. Mpls. Also, there was a patient with spinal cord injury that just left from Nanshan hospital. He had fairly good results but he lives up by St. Cloud.

Jon-Minnesota

Hi Jon from Mpls. Are you there with a patient? Tim did say someone was there from St.Paul. Lots of names have passed through this site (while in China)and with a MN. connection-very interesting. My husband & I started married life there (Mpls) and so did Tim's parents. Tim was born there. We now live 20 miles from St. Cloud. Shirley
