Encouragement

As I was searching the net for stem cell treatments for BI, I found Tori’s blog. Tori is a beautiful girl, and I’m hoping you see great results with the stem cell treatments. My daughter, Brooke also sustained a tbi in a car wreck (1996). I am anxious to follow Tori’s progress with the stem cell therapies, and to also give your family encouragement with what we have been through.

Brooke had just turned 16, was an inexperienced driver & missed a curve. She was air-lifted from the scene & placed in intensive care. She was eventually weaned from the respirator and sent on to a coma stim program, remaining there for 2 months - unresponsive to all therapy. Three months after her wreck, they recommended we place Brooke in a nursing home, but we chose to bring her home. She was total care, in diapers, and on a feeding tube 24/7. She received in-home OT, PT, Speech & home schooling. Her therapy schedule was intense, beginning in the morning, and continued all day.

After a few days at home, Brooke slowly began to respond. Her first response was to reach out for a therapist, we later saw a crooked smile, then her first tiny word came 90+ days after her wreck.

Brooke’s junior year of high school was spent at home. Thirteen months post accident, she returned to school part-time. The following spring, she graduated with her senior class, and presented the baccalaureate address.

Brooke has continued to improve - she enrolled in our local community college and earned her AA Degree, then moved onto a university campus & lived in the dorm (this was her most difficult step). With a great deal of support, she earned a BS Degree in Social Work in 2006. The local TV news did a feature story about her, if you would like to have a link to it, I would be happy to send it.

We used several alternative therapies: 300+ HBO treatments with Dr. Neubauer in Florida, scalp acupuncture with Dr. LiXin in Denver (specifically for stroke/BI), as well as regular acupuncture, biofeedback, cranial/sacral therapy, etc. It has been a very long road and the injury has left Brooke with several disabilities. Life is different-- for sure -- but good. I wish you the very best in Tori’s recovery.

There is hope.

I too was in a motorcycle accident just east of Strawberry Resavoir on 28 June 2005. I hit a 4 point bull elk on my way to work at the Provo post office. My family was told that if I ever came out of the coma I was in I would be in a wheel chair the rest of my life. My skull had many fractures. And my brain had been through a lot. I still have quite a memory loss. I have had to relearn how to walk, relearn how to talk and basically relearn how to do many things. My Doctor that has helped me the most is Dr. Todd Cook in Provo.
My biggest frustration has been people try to tell me, you can't do that. How do they or even I know, if I don't try.
I know that Tori was in the water for 20 minutes. I did not have that happen to me. But for her to still be here means she is a fighter and she still has a mission here.
Hang in there Tori. I learned, if there is something I want to do, I have to find a different way to do it.

I first heard about Tori last fall and have been keeping track of her progress. This idea had not come to me until today and I wanted to share this with you...

TORI

Tori was in my histroy class in 9th grade. I really didn't get to know her but I can say from what i do know about her is that she is one of the friendlyist people i know. She was always smiling in that class. When she smiled she made everyone else smile. She is so cute. And I just wanted Tori to know that I pray for her every night and hope that one day she will be able to go back to dancing and other normal things.
Speaking of accidents

Hello everyone.

Well I didn't have the pleasure to meet Tori, but if so many people are writting here, she must have been a very pleasant person to be with =)

I read the story on how she was helping her cousins get out... and I can relate to her because on Oct the 2nd 2005, I saw someone on the side of the road that had just gotten on an accident, stopped to help, and while helping, a drunk driver with a Ford explorer 2005 going 90 Mph, came and clipped the car we were helping, then my friend (he made it out of the way, he is the only one that saw her coming) then another guy that had also stopped to help, and then me.

Well you can only imagine what a car at that speed... and that size can do to you, well the other guy that was hit, exploded internally, I think 50% of his organs did. Me... didn't break a bone! but my memory, neck and back are messed up.

It's gonna be a slow recovery but I will recover, and I know Tori, though she wasn't as lucky, will recover as well. It's all a matter of will, and aparently she has a lot of that one =) best of lucks to her and I will keep in contact through this method.

A site passerby

I came across this website, almost by accident, and I just wanted to let whoever is grieving for Tori that my heart and prayers are with you. When I was 19 I was in a car with 4 of my friends when the driver lost control and the vehicle ended up rolling 3 1/2 times and landing upside down. In the accident my best friend sustained severe head trauma and broke her neck and past away after about 18 hours of life support. It's the hardest experience I've ever had to go through. It breaks my heart to know that any of you close to Tori are experiencing such emotional stress. And I know that nothing I say can make it better, but just remember that God is with you and that He does hear and answer prayers. I pray that Tori continues to get better and that those close by will be guided and comforted by the Spirit.

Tim and Maria...I feel your pain

I just want you to know that although I do not know Tori or your family, I am very touched by your lives. I can feel your pain and uncertainty as I have recently been affected by tragedy. My husband was in an auto pedestrian accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

I know that prayers do help heal and that even though some days are tougher than others, life does go on. I wish I had some magical advice or healer, but I don't. Be strong for Tori and don't forget to take care of yourselves. You can't take care of her if you aren't well enough to take care of yourself.

Tori and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

With love,
Kari
